Land Rover's Commitment To Apprentiships Recongized By The Learning and Skills Concil
Gaydon, Warwickshire, 1 February 2005 – Land Rover’s Dealer Apprenticeship programme has received a commendation from the Learning & Skills Council for its commitment to the development of young people following a record intake of 430 apprentices. The Apprenticeship scheme, based both in Warwickshire at the company’s Gaydon Head Quarters and Halewood, the Merseyside based Jaguar production facility, takes each apprentice through a 3½ year development programme consisting of placements at 174 Dealerships, across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Chris Banks, Chairman of the LSC who presented the company with a commitment certificate said: "Land Rover is an excellent example to employers both in the automotive sector and the wider business community of a company that is directly benefiting from Apprenticeships. By offering high quality training and a clearly defined career path, Apprenticeships play a crucial role in attracting the best and the brightest young men and women to the industry. The LSC urges more employers to use Apprenticeships to fill skills gaps, assist recruitment of the future workforce and increase productivity and performance."
Each Land Rover dealer apprentice attends a number of block release courses at one of three centres across the UK, working through a structured programme covering key skills, an NVQ and a Technical certificate. Throughout the 3-year period progress is closely monitored and each apprentice is supported by a personal tutor through dealer visits and practical observations. Michael Singh, a second year apprentice has found the whole experience incredibly rewarding. “When looking for a quality Apprenticeship scheme I quickly realised that Land Rover offered just what I was looking for and I have not been disappointed. The combination of practical and academic studies, has stood me in great stead for a successful future in this business.”
Further young people are set to benefit from this scheme as the company has pledged to continue to recruit 100 new apprentices each year. Stuart Clift, Director of Service Operations, Land Rover and Jaguar said of the commendation, “It is truly rewarding that our Apprenticeship programme has been recognised by a respected body who share our commitment to improving the knowledge and skill base of young people today. There are 230 Land Rover and Jaguar dealerships across our UK network and it is essential that we invest in the development of a world-class workforce who can truly represent and deliver the essence of our brand. Continuous learning will ensure we attract, retain and motivate young people and are seen as an employer of choice.”
