Autobytel  Katrina Reduces Demand for Gas Guzzlers

IRVINE, Calif. (Sept. 15, 2005) -- One of Hurricane Katrina's biggest impacts on the auto industry appears to be that it has hastened the consumer retreat from gas-guzzling trucks and sports-utility vehicles, according to a series of snap online pools conducted by Autobytel.

Sixty-six percent of consumers surveyed said that Katrina and its aftermath will cause car buyers to purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles, as compared to 29 percent who said there will be no noticeable impact on car-buying decisions.

When questioned about which aspect of the auto market would be most affected by Katrina, 52 percent replied "car-buying decisions," while only 1 percent named 'automakers' design decisions." Autobytel executives said this trend points to a disconnection between demand and supply.

Survey respondents predicted that Katrina's impact on car pricing and availability would be limited, with 76 percent of shoppers saying that vehicle prices would either remain stable or decrease. Thirty-five percent said they expect new vehicle availability to decrease
